Dr. Paras Diwan Memorial International “Energy Law” Moot Court Competition has a decade long legacy attached to it. The moot is known for consistently delivering cut-throat competition among the contending teams and promising an esteemed panel of judges in every edition, the event has furthered the awareness and interest of students across India – and beyond – in the field of energy laws. The moot proposition this year has been carefully curated to challenge the inquisitive minds of the law students with the core issue of ‘Energy Laws’ i.e., the legality involved in the wake of “Cross Border Electricity Transaction”. The proposition would challenge and stimulate even the finest minds, compelling students to delve deep into the challenges of the status quo in order to uncover novel, trailblazing solutions.

Competitive environment, panel of knowledgeable industry experts, a realistic and stimulating proposition, a warm OC to welcome you all, along with plenty of learning opportunities, awaits you this year at the 13th Dr. Paras Diwan Memorial International “Energy Law” Moot Court Competition, 2023.

 

 

DAY 1-  With extreme enthusiasm and excitement, the moment begins where we witness the 13th UPES DR. PARAS DIWAN MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL ENERGY LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION, 2023. This is where participants aspire to compete, learn, and excel in this unique expedition. The stage is set for our guest of honor/special guest/or dean to kick off the competition.

10:00 AM- Inaugural Ceremony

The 13th UPES Dr. Paras Diwan Memorial International Energy Law Moot Court Competition, 2023, begins with much fervor and excitement. Participants in this special journey aim to compete, learn, and succeed. Mr. Abhishek Sinha , Associate Dean , UPES ( School of Law) addressed the gathering with his inspiring words, and gave a warm welcome to all the participants. Subsequent to which, Mr. Ashutosh Tripathi, Associate Professor (Senior Scale), addressed the general instructions and code of conduct to all the participants. Dr. Shikha Dimri (cluster head), Prof. A.K. Tyagi, Dr. R.K. Chopra, and Prof. P.P. Mitra, all graced the ceremony with their presence.

11:00 AM-  Memorial Exchange Round

The competition spirit is high as we move forward with the submission of the hard copy of the memorials from all teams. The auditorium was marked with signs of anticipation among the team members as they shook hands with their budding competitors to receive the memorials. As the teams started analyzing the memorials of their opponents, they transgressed into a state of understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, the teams marched out of the auditorium for a beautiful visit followed by a zealous preparation for the researcher’s test.

1:00 PM Researchers Test

“I am not in competition with anyone but myself. My goal is to improve myself continuously.”

The court room for the researchers test were filled with students waiting in anticipation and nervousness to glance at the questionnaire to prepare to test true knowledge of law and statement of facts. The students competitively started penning down their answers while recalling various questions of law and fact. The students sighed with relief as they left the court hall with a sense of satisfaction as they overleaped the first stepping stone.

2:00 PM Orientation Session

SCC conducted an online orientation session for participants of the 13th UPES – DR. PARAS DIWAN MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL ENERGY LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION, 2023 in the auditorium. This session proved to be extremely beneficial and encouraging for the teams, as it got them in the mood for the competition. All participating teams were given the general guidelines and procedures for the competition, as well as expert advice.

DAY 2- As we enter day 2 of the competition, it is time to witness the commencement of the preliminary rounds of the competition. The participants of the competition will be showcasing their argumentative skills and competitive spirit.

9:30 AM- Judges briefing

The judges’ briefing has begun, and the Research Sub-Committee has put forth detailed explanations of the case record by providing a legal background and comprehensive contentions. The session was accompanied and assisted by the Core Committee. The judges started cramming up their legal documents and meaningfully started taking notes.

10:00 AM – Preliminary Round 1

I enjoy competition. I enjoy challenges. If a challenge is in front of me and it appeals to me, I will go ahead and conquer it.

The preliminary round 1 had begun, and the association witnessed the teams’ compassion and ardor as they flawlessly presented their arguments before the judges while being sharp and accurate in their arguments. The preliminary rounds are being adjudicated in the presence of the honorable judges, who use their exemplary legal knowledge to guide the participants through this competition.

11:30 AM – Preliminary Round 2

When you compete against everyone else, no one wants to help you. But when you compete against yourself, everyone wants to help you.

The Second Preliminary Round has commenced. The ardor of the teams is exceptionally high as we witness cutting-edge competition amongst the teams. We are fortunate to have a board of highly qualified judges who were keen on sharing their knowledge with the competitors. We pay our dues for their attendance.

1:00 PM Team Break-Ins-

The wait is finally over and the results of the preliminary rounds has been declared. The teams moving on to the quarters are TC 02, TC 03, TC 04, TC 11, TC 17, TC 19, TC 21 ,TC 23. The teams congratulated each other and showed tremendous joy. The competition has been a meaningful learning experience for all teams so far.

03:00 PM Quarter-Final Round

The quarter-final rounds have officially begun. The teams are at their highest guard and present their formal and well-constructed arguments. The participants are enthusiastic and eager to deliver their respective arguments. The judges have assessed the teams by cross-examining their arguments and also provided meaningful feedback for the same. The judges constantly consulted their legal documents and the compendium prepared by the teams to understand the issues presented to them.

DAY 3-A new day has begun and this day hold hope, joy, nervousness and aspiration for the participants who have put their blood, sweat and tears in this competition to come so far in it. The association wishes all the participants luck and hopes that the day holds a great experience for them.

9:00 AM- Judges briefing for Semi-Finals Round

The judges briefing for the Semi Finals has commenced. The honorable Judges have been turning their documents and have been jotting down points in order to impeccably judge the semi finals round. The Judges Briefing was marvelously delivered by the Research Sub-Committee in the presence of the Core committee of the Moot Court Association UPES.

10:00 AM- Semi Final Rounds

The time has come which all the participants were eagerly waiting for. The Semi-Finals rounds have begun and the participants are seen to be delivering their arguments with utmost professionalism and skill. Their contentions flawless, their mannerisms perfect. Each courtroom has an aura of cut throat competition as this round decides their fate for the Finals.

11:30 AM- Break Ins

The results are finally here which the teams were impatiently waiting for. The months of hardwork, sleepless nights all drop down to this moment. The teams qualifying for the finals are: –
1. TC 17
2. TC 21
The qualifying teams seems to be having the best days of their life. All the hard work has proven them right. All the participants were seen congratulating each other and bidding each other a final adieu. The qualifying teams shake hands in honor for each other and exchange their memorials. The teams are patiently studying their opponents memorials while deducing strategies and levying out strengths and weaknesses.

12:00 PM- Judges Briefing for Final Round

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.”

The Full bench sits in the auditorium for the judges briefing for the finals. The judges with their commendable observation skills note down important points. The atmospheric aura is professional. The Research subcommittee once again flawlessly explains the problem and the possible contentions. The judges are preparing themselves to adjudge the Finals of the 13th Dr. UPES Paras Diwan Memorial International Energy Law Moot Court Competition.

1:00 PM- Final Round

As the Full Bench is in session ready for adjudication, there seems to be no area for imperfections. Months of hard work put in by the partici[pants has brought them so far. The Speakers stand before the honorable Bench and deliver their well-constructed and flawlessly framed contentions. Only one team takes home the trophy. Only one team acquires the title of WINNER. The level of competition is immense. The definition of cut throat competition can very well be witnessed in Final round. The Judges Cross question the speakers about their contentions and arguments, the speakers leave no stone unturned and answer all the questions to the judges satisfaction. The Rebuttal round starts and the teams finally get to cross question each other’s argument. The teams having thoroughly examined their opponents’ memorials bombarde the other with Rebuttals. There is satisfaction in the eyes of the judges as they clearly have come to a conclusion.
