Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of Permanent Judges for the High Courts of Karnataka and Madras

The Collegium recommended names of 7 Judges who are to be appointed as Permanent Judges in their respective High Courts, with exception to Justice S. Rachaiah, whose name was recommended for appointment as Additional Judge of Karnataka High Court for fresh term of 1 year.

The Collegium comprising of Dr Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Sanjiv Khanna in a Resolution dated 31-08-2023, recommended the appointment of Additional Judges as Permanent Judges for Karnataka and Madras High Courts-

Karnataka High Court

On 30-05-2023, the Collegium of the High Court of Karnataka unanimously recommended the three Additional Judges for appointment as Permanent Judges. The Chief Minister and the Governor of Karnataka had concurred with the recommendation.

Considering the merit and suitability of the recommended names the Supreme Court Collegium made the following recommendation-

Additional Judges to be appointed as Permanent Judges

  1. Justice Anant Ramanath Hegde

  2. Justice Kannankuzhyil Sreedharan Hemalekha

Appointment of Additional Judge for a fresh term of one-year w.e.f. 08-11-2023.

  1. Justice Siddaiah Rachaiah

Madras High Court

On 20-06-2023, the Collegium of the Madras High Court unanimously recommended five Additional Judges for appointment as permanent judges of that High Court. The Chief Minister and the Governor of Tamil Nadu concurred with the recommendation.

Having considered all aspects of the matter and on an overall consideration of the above proposal by the High Court Collegium, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the following names-

Additional Judges to be appointed as Permanent Judges

  1. Justice A.A Nakkiran,

  2. Justice Nidumolu Mala,

  3. Justice S Sounthar,

  4. Justice Sunder Mohan

  5. Justice Kabali Kumaresh Babu.
