Supreme Court extends Maharashtra Speaker’s deadline to decide Shiv Sena MLA disqualification till Jan 10

The Supreme Court had earlier set 31-12-2023 as the deadline for Maharashtra’s Speaker Rahul Narwekar to decide the matter.

Supreme Court: In a plea by Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar seeking additional 15 days to decide Shiv Sena MLAs’ disqualification, the Bench of Dr. DY Chandrachud, CJI, JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, JJ. granted an extension of 10 days to decide the said matter till 10-01-2024. Earlier, the Supreme Court had fixed 31-12-2023 as the deadline for deciding the pleas.

The Court had noted that Maharashtra Speaker sought reasonable extension of time in this matter, since 2.71 lakh documents need to be examined as stated by the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. The said documents included 34 petitions from both camps and replies to more than 1100 questions.

It was submitted that the hearings of disqualification pleas were being conducted regularly and were likely to be concluded soon. Therefore, an extension of 15 days was sought by the Speaker.
