Medha Patkar sentenced to 5 months imprisonment

Saket Court: Metropolitan Magistrate Raghav Sharma sentenced Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and Indian social activist Medha Patkar to five months simple imprisonment in the criminal defamation case by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena in 2001.

She was convicted 24-05-2024 for the said offence and was ordered to pay compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs.

Vinai Saxena was the Chief of NGO National Council for Civil Liberties and published an advertisement against Medha’s Narmada Bachao Andolan. Responding to the same, Patkar issued a press note dated titled “true face of patriot.” Saxena filed the case against Patkar in 2001 for defaming him in the said notice.
