Write-Up for SCC Times: Note on the Seminar

The Centre for Fashion, Media and Entertainment Laws (C-FAME) at Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, Visakhapatnam (DSNLU) is a “one of its kind” legal research centre focusing on the niche areas of fashion, media and entertainment laws. The idea behind C-FAME is simple — helping law students understand and explore the lucrative middle ground between the creative and the legal.

Fashion law and media and entertainment law as areas of legal practise and study are gaining contemporary significance due to the increased industry demand for specialised legal expertise and awareness in these fields, owing to modern-day concerns and developments such as the OTT-boom, rapid counterfeiting, piracy issues and environmental sustainability concerns. It is to rise up to this demand and advance forward that C-FAME has taken shape. With a vision of moulding students to reach heights of excellence in the legal and regulatory fields, C-FAME believes in the expansion of the study of law beyond the traditional areas of the subject, to venture into high-potential, growth-driven and sheerly fascinating fields of law that are multidisciplinary in nature due to their intersection with entirely separate industries, such as fashion, media and entertainment laws. C-FAME aims to lead the efforts in exploring, comprehending, building constructive dialogue and ultimately undertaking quality legal research in the unique intersection between fashion, media, entertainment and law.

In India, not many students of law get a chance to explore the legal practice in these fields since fashion law and media and entertainment law do not form a part of the traditional law school curriculum. To enable law students to gain a deep understanding of fashion, media and entertainment laws, C-FAME is organising a One-day Seminar on “Introduction to Fashion, Media and Entertainment Laws!” in partnership with SCC Times, on the 21st of October 2024, offline, at the DSNLU campus. Through this seminar, C-FAME intends to take the initial step in formally introducing fashion, media and entertainment laws to the students of DSNLU, thereby marking the beginning of its student-led effort to lead the exploration, academic discourse and research in the subjects of fashion, media and entertainment in the law-school circuit. The seminar will not only entail an enriching lecture on the subjects by the expert but will also involve interesting case-study discussions and other academic exercises.

As the esteemed speaker for the seminar, C-FAME has invited Ms Namrata Pahwa who is a practising advocate based in Delhi-NCR specialising in intellectual property, fashion law and media and entertainment law, alongside areas such as general corporate and civil dispute resolution. After completing her LLM from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Ms Pahwa decided to take a leap and began her own practice in intellectual property, fashion law and media and entertainment law in the year 2016. Ms Pahwa has in-depth expertise in handling prosecution, litigation and enforcement actions across these practice areas and has been actively involved in academic efforts to spread knowledge in these fields. She has delivered multiple lectures and seminars on fashion, media and entertainment laws. Today, she works with retail giants, well-known fashion brands, NGOs and educational institutions in matters involving intellectual property law, fashion law, media law, entertainment law, information technology law, cyber law, competition law and commercial issues regarding these fields.

With the expert support and assistance of Ms Pahwa, C-FAME is opening gates for learning and discourse on the legal practice in fashion, media and entertainment laws and promises to work diligently towards bringing fashion, media and entertainment to the legal student fraternity across India.
