Former Supreme Court Justice Madan B. Lokur appointed as Chairperson of UN Internal Justice Council

Retired Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur served as a Supreme Court judge from 2012 to 2018.

UN Secretary-General, António Guterres appointed Justice (Retd.) Madan B Lokur, Supreme Court of India, as a Chairperson of the UN Internal Justice Council (‘the Council’) for a term of four years, ending on 12-11-2028.

The letter penned by Secretary-General also appointed other members of the Council namely, Ms. Carmen Artigas (Uruguay), as an external jurist nominated by staff, Ms. Rosalie Balkin (Australia), as an external jurist nominated by management, Mr Stefan Brezina (Austria) as staff representative and Mr Jay Pozenel (USA) as management representative.

Further, the letter congratulated Justice Lokur for his appointment to the Council, which is a key pillar of the system of administration of Justice at the UN. Justice Lokur retired from the Supreme Court on 30-12-2018.
