Procedure for investigation

On 28-1-2025, the Delhi Government notified the Procedure for investigation to be followed by an officer in-charge of Police Station, Rules 2024 to give police officers a clear guideline on how to conduct investigations. The provisions came into force on 28-1-2025.

Key Points:

  1. The General Diary Report (‘Diary’) will be maintained by the officer in charge of the Police station.

  2. The main purpose of maintaining such Diary is to document cases where the officer decides that no investigation is needed based on Section 176 of Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 which relates to “Procedure for investigation”.

  3. This Diary will consist of the following offences:

    • When an officer deems it is unnecessary to go to the spot or send a subordinate officer to investigate.

    • When the officer thinks that there is no sufficient ground to proceed with investigations.

  4. The Diary will have to be maintained on Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems (‘CCTNS’).

  5. In case where te officer decides that no further investigation is required, he will have to convey the same to the informant immediately through electronic mode.

  6. The following details have to be given on CCTNS:

    • Name of informant;

    • Contact details;

    • Present and permanent address:

    • Brief of information;

    • Reasons for not proceeding to investigate;

    • Whether informant notified;

    • Mode of information.
