On 09-02-2025 at the India International Centre in New Delhi in order to recognize and promote young talent in the field of litigation at the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court Lawyers Welfare Trust (SCLWT) granted the prestigious Justice J.S. Verma Fellowship to three lawyers: Ninni Susan Thomas, Kumar Abhishek, and Sreekar Aechuri.
The conferment was made in the presence of Justice K.V. Viswanathan, a former Trustee and Mrs. Sanaya Nariman, wife of Justice (Retd.) Rohinton Fali Nariman. In addition, Mr. Sumeet Malik, Director, EBC Group of Companies and Ms. Shubhra Verma, daughter of Justice Verma were also present.
As part of the fellowship, the winners will receive a monthly stipend and gain access to subscriptions for Legal Research Database portal- SCC Online, and Media portals- LiveLaw and Bar & Bench.
The Chairman, Justice (Retd.) Aftab Alam, as well as the Trustees Chander Uday Singh, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Ragenth Basant, Mrs. Mamta Kachhwaha, Ms. Vrinda Bhandari, Jaikriti Sinh Jadeja, Adit Subramaniam Pujari, Pallav Mongia, Mr. Nikhil Singhvi, and Rahul Narayan were also present at the event.
For the 2025 edition of the fellowship, over 200 applications were received, from which 21 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed by panels led by SCLWT Chairman Justice (Retd.) Aftab Alam.
About the Trust
The SCLWT was established in 2008 with a substantial corpus from a practicing Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court to support and promote professional opportunities and welfare programs for lawyers in the Supreme Court of India.
One of the objectives of the Trust is to encourage and promote deserving young advocates who wish to practice in the Supreme Court of India.
The SCLWT has instituted three fellowships, known as the Justice J.S. Verma Fellowships. The Fellowships have been instituted with this objective and have in the past awarded fellowships to meritorious young advocates.
