Greetings from the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society at the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata!

It gives us immense pleasure to invite your esteemed institution to participate in the 5th Edition of the NUJS Mediation Competition (5th NUJS MC), to be held from 24th to 26th March 2023.

About the Competition:

The NUJS Mediation Competition is the flagship event of the ADR Society of NUJS, Kolkata, one of the premier National Law Universities in India. Each year since 2019, the competition has garnered participation from prestigious universities not just across the country, but on a global level, from countries such as the United Kingdom, Bangladesh, Singapore, Australia, Pakistan, and many more. In 2021, the competition was a qualifier from the prestigious International Mediation Singapore, hosted by SIMI, the Singapore International Mediation Institute. In 2022, the 4th NUJS Mediation Competition was a Qualifier for the prestigious Transatlantic Negotiation Competition, 2022. With collaborations with top-tier law firms and chambers in India and the best of the best of those in the profession in both India and abroad, this year, the NUJS MC promises to be a glorious experience, at the end of which lies prizes and exciting internship opportunities!

Format:

The Competition will be held in a hybrid format, with 16 teams competing online and 16 teams competing offline on the campus of WBNUJS, Kolkata. There shall be two preliminary rounds followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. Universities may indicate via mail their interest in sending more than 1 team. The selection of the second team is contingent on the availability of slots. It should be noted that the allocation of slots to any university will be a decision made solely by the ADR Society of NUJS, and shall be final and binding.

The three members of the team should be divided into the following two sub-teams – a Negotiating Team, comprising two members who shall play the roles of client and counsel, and a single Mediator.

The Negotiating Teams and Mediators from each University would compete separately, and breaks would be separate. Each round shall therefore be a mediated negotiation, with two negotiating teams and two mediators. Teams may also be accompanied by a maximum of 1 coach.
