CAA and Rules framed thereunder aim to grant citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis who arrived in India on or before 31-12-2014, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
Supreme Court: In pleas filed seeking a stay on the recently notified Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 which effectively brought into force the Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 (‘CAA’), the three-Judge bench of Dr. DY Chandrachud, CJI, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, JJ, issued notice to the Centre and asked it to file its reply.
The Central government notified the rules last week, on 11-03-2024, which effectively brought into force the CAA, which aims to grant citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis who arrived in India on or before 31-12-2014, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
The matter will next be taken upon 09-04-2024.
