Vinesh Phogat CAS Appeal | Sole Arbitrator to decide matter before the end of Paris Olympics

On 7-8-2024, Vinesh Phogat had appealed against her disqualification and replacement by the United World Wrestling (UWW) because she failed her second weigh-in, before the gold medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 that was due to commence on the same day.

Court of Arbitration for Sport (Ad-Hoc Division): On 9-8-2024, the ad-hoc division of CAS registered the application filed by noted Indian wrestler and Olympian, Vinesh Phogat.

On 7-8-2024, Vinesh Phogat had appealed against her disqualification and replacement by the United World Wrestling (UWW) because she failed her second weigh-in, before the gold medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 that was due to commence on the same day.

Phogat initially sought a decision to annul the challenged decision by the UWW and order of another weigh-in before the final match however as well as a decision declaring her eligibility to compete in the final. However, she did not request urgent interim measures.

As of now, Vinesh Phogat has confirmed her request to seek annulment of the challenged decision and to be awarded a shared silver medal in the Women’s Freestyle 50kg competition.

The matter has now been referred to Dr. Annabelle Bennett, AC SC sitting as Sole Arbitrator, who will hold the hearing in the matter from 9-8-2024. The Sole Arbitrator’s decision is expected to be issued before the end of Paris Olympics, 2024.

An ad-hoc division of the CAS has been set up in Paris for resolution by arbitration of any disputes arising during the Olympic Games or during a period of 10 days preceding the Opening Ceremony. the Olympics will end on 11-08-2024.

Senior advocate Harish Salve is set to represent ace wrestler Vinesh Phogat in her appeal filed before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her disqualification from the Paris Olympics. Vinesh will also have four pro bono lawyers from the Paris Bar representing her besides Salve.
