SC stays NGT order restricting number of Dhol, Tasha, Zanj performers for Ganesh Visarjan in Pune

The NGT had directed to restrict the total number of Dhol, Tasha, Zanj Groups to only 30 per group along with real time monitoring of noise pollution around each Ganesh pandal and initiating criminal proceedings against the violators.

Supreme Court: In an appeal filed by Yuva Vadya Pathak Trust against the National Green Tribunal order, directing that the total number of Dhol, Tasha, Zanj members in each troupe during the Ganpati Visarjan Procession in Pune shall not exceed 30 in number, the three Judge Bench of Dr. DY Chandrachud, CJI, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, JJ. stayed the direction issued by NGT.

Several directives were issued by the NGT to implement noise control measures during the Ganeshotsav celebrations in Pune.

One of the directions empowered Pune police to seize Dhol, Tasha or Zanj units if the total number of performers in a troupe exceeded 30.

The Court observed that “NGT Directions will affect the ones who play Dhol, Tasha during Ganesh festival. There shall be stay on the direction number 4 by the NGT. Let them do their Dhol, Tasha. This is in the heart of Pune”.
