Appointment of Judges | SC seeks list of reiterated Collegium recommendations; Asks reasons for not clearing the appointments

The Court was hearing a PIL seeking directions for the Union Government clear the Collegium recommendations. The Court is also due to hear a contempt petition filed by State of Jharkhand vis-a-vis delay in clearing the transfer of Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, for appointment as next Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

Appointment of Judges Collegium recommendations

Supreme Court: The 3-Judge Bench of Dr DY Chandrachud, CJI, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra JJ., on 20-9-2024, directed the Attorney General for India to provide a chart of candidates whose names have been reiterated by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment as Judges. The Court further directed the AGI to provide the reasons for not clearing these appointments.

The Court was hearing a PIL seeking directions for the Union Government to clear the Collegium recommendations. The Court is also due to hear a contempt petition filed by State of Jharkhand vis-a-vis delay in clearing the transfer of Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, for appointment as next Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

On 11-7-2024, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hrishikesh Roy, on 11-07-2024, recommended the transfer of Justice M.S Ramachandra Rao, who is currently the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, to Jharkhand High Court as its next Chief Justice, who was to take over the office after retirement of Dr Justice B.R Sarangi on 19-07-2024.

In a recent recommendation dated 17-9-2024, the Collegium raised the issue of pending recommendations for appointment of 7 High Court Judges dated 11-7-2024.

The matter has been adjourned for a week.
