Supreme Court Collegium recommends appointment of Judges for Madras High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, CJ., Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai on 10-9-2024 recommended the names of 5 Additional Judges to be elevated as Permanent Judges and 3 Judicial Officers as Judges of Madras High Court.

Supreme Court Collegium modifies 3 earlier recommendations for appointment of High Court Chief Justices

Reconsidering its recommendations dated 11-07-2024 for appointment of Chief Justices of High Courts, Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr. DY Chandrachud, CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai, vide recommendation/ resolution dated 17-07-2024 superseded three of its earlier recommendations.

SC Collegium recommends appointment of 9 Advocates as Judges of Bombay HC

The Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai, on 24-9-2024 resolved to recommend the following Advocates be appointed as Judges of the High Court of Bombay.

SC Collegium recommends appointment of 2 Judicial Officers as Judges of Patna HC

On 24-9-2024, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the names Shashi Bhushan Prasad Singh, and Ashok Kumar Pandey as Judges of the High Court of Judicature at Patna.

SC Collegium recommends appointment of Justice Narendar G. as next Chief Justice of Uttaranchal HC

The Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gavai, on 24-9-2024, resolved to recommend that Justice Narendar G. be appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Uttaranchal consequent upon the retirement of Justice Ritu Bahri on 10-10-2024.

Supreme Court Judges’ Strength

There was no change in the picture vis-a-vis Supreme Court’s Judges’ strength. With Justice Hima Kohli’s retirement, the number fell from 34 to 33. There were no new recommendations or appointments made in the Supreme Court for September.

High Court Appointments

In September, the Supreme Court took strict note over delay by the Ministry of LAw and Justice in confirming the Collegium recommendations regarding appointment of Judges especially Chief Justices for several High Courts. The 3-Judge Bench of Dr DY Chandrachud, CJI, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra JJ., on 20-9-2024, directed the Attorney General for India to provide a chart of candidates whose names have been reiterated by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment as Judges. The Court further directed the AGI to provide the reasons for not clearing these appointments. The Court was hearing a PIL seeking directions for the Union Government to clear the Collegium recommendations.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Law and Justice notified appointment of several Judges, including Chief Justices of 8 High Courts.

Appointment of High Court Chief Justices

  1. Justice Manmohan was appointed as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on 21-9-2024. He had been functioning as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court since November 2023.

  2. Justice Rajiv Shakdher was appointed Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

  3. Justice Suresh Kumar Kait was appointed as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.

  4. Justice Indra Prasanna Mukherji was appointed as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.

  5. Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar was appointed as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court.

  6. Justice Tashi Rabstan was appointed as Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. He had been functioning as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court since July 2024.

  7. Justice K.R Shriram was appointed as Chief Justice of Madras High Court.

Transfer of Judges

  • Justice MS Ramachandra Rao was transferred to Jharkhand High Court to take charge as that High Court’s Chief Justice.

  • Justice Shamim Ahmed was transferred from Allahabad High Court to Madras High Court.
