ANNOUNCEMENT:
Government Law College, Mumbai, in association with the Wildlife Conservation Trust, presents The 6th Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition, 2024-25. The Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition is India’s first wildlife conservation-focused Moot Court Competition. This year’s event marks its sixth edition, with the view of creating awareness on the challenges faced by wildlife among law students. The Competition is scheduled to be held offline from 9th to 11th January, 2025 at Government Law College, Mumbai.
ABOUT THE ORGANISERS:
Government Law College, established in 1855, is the oldest law college in Asia, a pioneer in legal education – an institution par excellence. The generations of legal luminaries who have been nurtured by this unique institution have made a seminal contribution to the evolution of the Indian Legal System. Sir Dinshaw Mulla, Mr. A. A. A. Fyzee and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar have all been the principals of this venerated institution. Former Chief Justices of India including Mr. Harilal Kania – the first Chief Justice of India, Mr. P. N. Bhagwati, Mr. S. H. Kapadia, Mr. M. H. Kania and Mr. S. P. Bharucha all began their careers at GLC. The Hon’ble President of India — Her Excellency Ms. Pratibha Patil, Mr. Soli Sorabjee, Mr. Fali Nariman, Mr. Anil Divan, Mr. T. R. Andhyarujina and Mr. Goolam Vahanvati have all been students of this very institution.
The Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition is organized in association with the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT). The Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT) was envisioned to preserve and protect India’s rich natural heritage. Currently, WCT works in and around 160 Protected Areas across 23 states and four Union Territories in the country covering 82% of India’s tiger reserves, 24% of the national parks and sanctuaries, and impacting a population base of approximately 3.5 million people.
The Supporting Partner for the 6th Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition, 2024-25, is DSP Asset Managers. It is backed by the 150+ year-old DSP Group, which has played a significant role in the growth and professionalization of capital markets and the money management industry in India. DSP Asset Managers has been an avid supporter of WCT’s initiatives and projects for several years.
FORMAT OF THE MOOT:
Maximum of 20 teams shall participate and the registrations shall be accepted on first-come first-serve basis. The Competition will be conducted in an offline mode. The participating teams will go through two Preliminary Rounds of Arguments, Quarter-Final Round of Arguments, the Semi-Final Round of Arguments and ultimately, the Final Round of Arguments. Eminent lawyers and Judges of the highest standing in India, academicians and experts in the field of wildlife and forest law shall converge to adjudicate the various rounds of the Competition. The awards given out include prizes for the Best Team, Second-Best Team, Best Speaker, Second-Best Speaker, Best Memorial and Second-Best Memorial.
THE PANEL DISCUSSION:
The Wildlife Protection Government Law College National Moot Court Competition is accompanied by a Panel Discussion that delves into current socio-legal questions, that often relate closely to the Proposition. Featuring of eminent personalities from the field of environmental law, wildlife conservation, media and so on, this discussion offers unique insights into contemporary legal and societal issues.
Last year’s Panel Discussion was held on the topic ‘Religious Practices in Protected Areas: Does Sanctity of Faith trump Ecological Sanctity?’. Renowned Wildlife Activists such as Dr. Anish Andheria, Mr. Debi Goenka and Ms. Bhavna Menon spoke at the Panel Discussion along with Mr. Akhilesh Menezes as the Moderator. This year, we are pleased to announce that the Panel Discussion will take place offline at Government Law College, Mumbai. We extend a warm invitation to all those interested in attending the Panel Discussion.
THE MOOT PROPOSITION:
The Moot Proposition primarily deals with the conflict between wildlife conservation and public safety, focusing on the legality of government actions such as permitting the hunting of endangered Schedule I species and imposing an internet shutdown to curb the outrage on social media caused by fatal animal attacks.
REGISTRATIONS:
All registering colleges must provisionally register themselves by sending an e-mail to wpm.glc@gmail.com. The last date to provisionally register is 25th November, 2024 by 11:59 p.m. IST. Only after the provisional registration has been confirmed shall a link to a Google Form and details for the payment of registration fees be provided.
The Registration Fee is Rs. 5,000/- (Rupees Five Thousand Only) per Team. The Registration Fee must be paid via NEFT, the details of which shall be provided once the provisional registration has been confirmed.
This Registration Fee is inclusive of accommodation which shall be provided for teams residing outside of Mumbai.

ELIGIBILITY:
Participation is restricted to bona-fide law students enrolled either in the 3-year L.L.B Law course, or the 5-year integrated Law course studying in India. Participation is limited to only one team per college or university. Cross college/university teams are strictly prohibited.
