Justice K. Vinod Chandran sworn in as Judge of Supreme Court of India

Justice K. Vinod Chandran, who was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge by the President of India on 13-1-2025, took oath of office on 16-1-2025; the oath was administered by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Chief Justice of India.

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, CJI, on 7-1-2025 recommended the name of Justice K. Vinod Chandran as Judge of Supreme Court of India.

Justice K. Vinod Chandran was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Kerala on 8-11-2011 and was elevated as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Patna on 29-3-2023 and has been functioning as the Chief Justice of that High Court since then.

Justice Chandran has served as a Judge of the High Court for more than 11 years and as a Chief Justice of a High Court for more than a year. During his long tenure as a Judge and Chief Justice of the High Court, Justice Chandran has acquired significant experience in diverse fields of law.

The Collegium further considered that Justice Chandran stands at Sl. No. 13 in the combined all-India seniority of High Court Judges; and in the seniority of Judges hailing from the High Court of Kerala, Justice K. Vinod Chandran stands at Sl. No. 1.

Furthermore, recommending his name, the Collegium took into consideration the fact that there is no representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court from the High Court of Kerala.

With Justice K. Vinod Chandran’s induction, the judicial strength of the Supreme Court Judges now stands at 33 Judges, just one short of its full strength of 34 Judges.
