6th Surana & Surana – Army Institute of Law Family Law Moot Court Competition, 2025

‘The Army Institute of Law, Mohali (AIL) and Surana & Surana is conducting the 6th Family Law Moot Court Competition, 2025 to be held on 21st & 22nd February 2025 (online) and on 29th & 30th March (offline).

About the Army Institute of Law

The Army Institute of Law (AIL) was established in July 1999 by the Indian Army under the aegis of the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) at its interim location at Patiala. In July 2003, the Institute shifted to Sector 68, Mohali. The Institute is accredited with grade ‘B’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

About the Competition

The prestigious Surana & Surana and AIL Family Law Moot Court Competition, hosted by Army Institute of Law will be held in online mode on 21st and 22nd February and in physical mode on 29th and 30th March at the Army Institute of Law campus, Mohali. This will be the 6th edition of the competition.

Eligibility Criteria

Participation is restricted to bona-fide law students either enrolled in the 3-year law course or the 5-year integrated law course.

General Rules

  • Only one team from each participating college shall be registered for the competition. Each team shall comprise of either three members (two Speakers and one Researcher) or two members (two Speakers) only.

  • No faculty member, coach, observer, or a designated observer or fourth member is allowed to accompany the team, and neither will be allowed to join the teams during oral rounds.

  • The language for the Competition shall be English only.

  • The rounds shall comprise of- Preliminary rounds 1 & 2/Octa (Online), Quarter/Semi and Final Rounds (Offline Rounds).

  • No change in the names of the participants shall be permitted unless the same has been communicated to the organizers a week before the event in exceptional circumstances (at the discretion of organizers). It will be only allowed if the participating college attaches due proof.

Registration Details

  • Online registrations are open from 18th January, 2025. The teams must register online by 14th Feb 2025. Teams will have to register online at www.moot.in.

  • No temporary registration requests will be entertained. Kindly refrain from sending such requests to Surana & Surana or Army Institute of Law (AIL).

  • Participants will receive an automated system generated acknowledgement on successful submission of registration. Participants will receive an approval as acceptance of their request for participation by 15th Feb 2025 or earlier.

  • Registration Process :-

    Option 1 — The Registration form cum Approval letter as provided in the rules duly signed & sealed by your university/college/moot society.

    Option 2 — Upload both (i) & (ii) together as a single PDF

    1. The Registration form cum Approval letter (without seal & signature) as provided in the rules duly filled along with

    2. Scanned copy of the authorisation letter with sign and seal from your university/college/moot society

      or

    An email communication from the official id (to be filled as notification email id during online registration process) of the institution, from your university/college/moot society to complete the registration process.

    [Note:

    1. Signatories on the registration form should be any of the following :- Faculty-in-charge of MCA / MCS / MCC, Registrar, Dean, Principal, Director, Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor.

    2. Registration without the scanned copy of the approval letter / an email communication from the college/institution/university or duly attested registration form will not be valid.]

  • Soft copy of the registration and approval letter/ an email communication as a single PDF to be sent by email to: ailsurana2025@gmail.com marked as 6th SURANA & SURANA AND ARMY INSTITUTE OF LAW NATIONAL FAMILY LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION REGISTRATION as subject of the mail latest by 14th Feb 2025. The provisional team code shall be allotted to the registered teams by Host University soon after receiving of registration particulars.

  • On receiving the provisional team code from Moot Court Society of AIL you may proceed to pay the registration fees.

  • A registration fee of Rs. 1500/- is to be paid online by 14th Feb, 2024 at: https://www.onlinesbi.sbi/sbicollect/icollecthome.htm?corpID=593474

    Receipt of the online payment to be sent by email to: ailsurana2025@gmail.com. Fee once paid will not be refunded.

  • Upon qualifying for the quarter-final rounds, teams opting for accommodation will have to pay Rs. 7500 by 1st March 2025.

Important Dates

  • Release of Moot Proposition: 18th January 2025

  • Deadline for Registration along with submission of the fee for memorial @Rs.1500/-: 14th February 2025

  • Deadline for seeking clarifications to the proposition: 14th February 2025

  • Release of clarifications: 15th February 2025.

  • Deadline for submission of soft copies of Memorials: 16h February2025.

  • Orientation, Draw of Lots, Exchange of Memorial: 21st February 2025

  • Preliminary Rounds I & II / Octa Finals: 22nd February 2025

  • Last date for submission of Travel Plans and submission of fee for accommodation (Rs. 7500): 1st March 2025

  • Deadline for submission of Hard Copies of Memorials (five) (both sides): 28th March 2025

  • Quarter Finals & Semi Finals: 29th March 2025

  • Finals and Valedictory: 30th March 2025

Rounds:

  • There will be two Preliminary Rounds of arguments, an Octa final, a Quarter Final, a Semi-Final and a Final round. The organizers reserve the right to amend the schedule / rounds as per the number of participating teams.

  • Octa final will be conducted if the participation exceeds 24 teams.

  • Quarter final will be conducted if the participation exceeds 16 teams.

Preliminary Round

  1. There will be two preliminary rounds of arguments per team, once for applicant & another for respondent.

  2. No team will face each other more than once in the preliminary rounds.

  3. Each team will face a different two-judge bench in their second round of arguments.

  4. Preliminary Rounds I, II will be held Virtually on 22nd February 2025 (Saturday).

  5. Top sixteen / eight teams from the Preliminary Rounds will advance to the Octa / Quarter final rounds.

Octa Final / Quarter Final / Semi Final Round / Final Round:

  1. Draw of lots/ Power match will decide the side of the arguments in Quarterfinals, Semifinals & Finals. The Quarterfinal / Semifinal are knockout rounds.

  2. The Octa Final will be held (Virtually) on 22nd February 2025

  3. The Quarter Final & Semi Final will be held On Campus on 29th March 2025

  4. The Finals will be held On Campus on 30th March 2025

Awards- worth Rs. 1,07,000/-

  • WinningTeam :- Rs. 30,000/- along with a certificate

  • Runners Up :- Rs. 24,000/- along with a certificate

  • Best Memorial :- Rs. 15,000/- along with a certificate

  • Second Best Memorial :- Rs. 9,000/- along with a certificate

  • Best Student Advocate :- Rs. 10,000/- along with a certificate

In addition to the above awards, plaques and certificates will be given to other categories of winners. All participants will be awarded participation certificates.
