Supreme Court: The 3-Judge Bench of Sanjiv Khanna, CJ., Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan, JJ., on 6-2-2025, directed police authorities of 7 States to ensure protection for various officials of Discovery Channel who are allegedly facing threats after the release of the documentary series Cult of Fear: Asaram Bapu. The Bench said that it may not be possible for the petitioners to approach different High Courts where their staff may be posted and therefore, issued notice to the Central government and the authorities in Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
The Court issued the order while hearing upon petition filed by Discovery Communications India and its senior staff in the wake of several hate comments received by them on social media account of Discovery Channel.
The petition under Article 32 of the Constitution, arrayed the Union Government and the States of Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana, Telangana and their respective Police Chiefs.
