Supreme Court Collegium recommends transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma to Allahabad High Court

An in-house enquiry was initiated by the Supreme Court after reports surfaced that a huge pile of unaccounted cash was found from the residence of Justice Varma.

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Chief Justice of India, on 24-3-2025, recommended the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma, currently serving as Judge of Delhi High Court, to Allahabad High Court.

The aforesaid decision was taken by the Collegium after meetings conducted on 20-3-2025 and 24-3-2025.

The Chief Justice of India had constituted a three-member Committee to conduct an enquiry into the cash-in-house matter against Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, Delhi High Court, as part of the in-house enquiry which the Court has initiated into the matter. An in-house enquiry was initiated by the Court after reports surfaced that a huge pile of unaccounted cash amounting to Rs. 15 crores were found from the residence of Justice Varma. The Committee constituted of Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court; Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court; and Anu Sivaraman, Judge, Karnataka High Court.

The Court had also directed Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya not to assign any judicial work to Justice Yashwant Varma for the time being.
