SC refuses to entertain fresh pleas challenging Waqf (Amendment) Act

The Court granted liberty to the petitioners to withdraw the pleas and raise additional grounds as impleaders/intervenors in the ongoing hearing of the main case listed next week.

Supreme Court: The Division Bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar, J. refused to entertain any further pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025.

However, the Bench allowed the petitioners to raise any additional grounds of challenge as interveners in the main case listed in the next week.

The Bench suggested that an impleadment application be filed.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed in Lok Sabha on 03-04-2025 and was tabled in Lok Sabha on 02-04-2025 by Minister of Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, proposing revision of several clauses in the existing Waqf Act, 1995, which governs the administration of waqf properties in India. On 05-04-2025, the President gave assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 to amend the Waqf Act, 1995.
